UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia Program Frequently Asked Questions

  • Applications are open for submission at any time with the annual closing date of October 1st of each year. Applicants selected will start the following May.

  • UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia/Gannon University requires applicants applying for enrollment to submit a competitive GRE (Graduate Record Exam) score. Official GRE scores should be sent directly to Gannon University - GRE code 2270.

  • Approximately twenty student registered nurse anesthetists are accepted per cohort.

  • No, the Nurse Anesthesia program is a full time course of study option.

  • The program is 36-months in length, beginning with the Summer Semester (May) each year. The first two semester will be online.

  • Applicants to the Nurse Anesthesia Program are required to have a minimum of two years, recent, full-time acute care RN experience prior to applying to the program. Preferred acute care experience is obtained in a CTICU, MICU, PICU, NICU, or SICU. Emergency Department experience is only considered if obtained in a large trauma center. Post Anesthesia Care Unit experience is only considered if obtained in a unit where open heart, cardiothoracic, cardiovascular, or neuro patients recover before admission to a SICU. The applicant’s critical care experience must demonstrate management of the acutely ill patient with invasive hemodynamic monitoring, ventilatory care, and pharmacologic intervention.

  • No. UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia/Gannon University is a full-time 36-month continuous program of study.

  • Very few student registered nurse anesthetists are able to work on a regular basis and successfully complete the program requirements. The average student registered nurse anesthetist commits a minimum of 56 hours/week of time to the course of study.

  • Yes, “In-Person” interviews are conducted annually as a component of the admissions process. Applications to the UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia/Gannon University are reviewed based on published admissions criteria. Interviews are offered to the most qualified applicants. Meeting the published admissions criteria does not guarantee a granting of interview or admission into the UPMC Hamot School of Anesthesia/Gannon University.
